Our commitment
Rebar should work for every lifter, whatever way they use their phone. We treat a control that VoiceOver can't name, or a screen that breaks with your settings, as a bug, and we fix it like one. This page covers the Rebar iPhone app, the Apple Watch app and the web app at getrebar.app. It says what works today and where we still fall short.
What the app supports
- VoiceOver: buttons, tabs, sheets and toggles have spoken names, and say whether they're selected or done. Decorative icons are hidden so VoiceOver doesn't read them. Messages that appear on their own, like a notice in a sheet, a sign-up error or going offline, are read out. Automated checks run on every change to keep the main navigation, sheets and icon buttons labeled.
- Larger text: text follows the text size set on your iPhone. Big numbers and headings, like the weight in a hero card, grow less than body text, up to about one and a half times their size, so they still fit on screen.
- Dark mode: Rebar follows your phone's appearance, or you can pick Light or Dark at the top of Settings.
- Reduce Motion: when Reduce Motion is on in your iPhone's settings, Rebar turns off its movement effects: counting numbers, sliding cards, charts that draw in and buttons that scale when pressed.
- Color and contrast: the colors that carry meaning, such as status, records and badge tiers, are tested to reach a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for text. A new record is marked in gold and also named to VoiceOver, so it doesn't rely on color alone.
- Your own way of training: kilograms or pounds, haptics on or off, a rest-timer sound you can turn on, your default rest time, and an option to keep the screen awake during a workout so you don't have to unlock it between sets.
The web app
- A "Skip to content" link at the top of every page, for keyboard and screen reader users.
- A visible focus ring on links and buttons when you use a keyboard.
- Light and dark themes that follow your system setting, with a switch in Settings.
- Motion is reduced when your system asks for it: elements fade in instead of moving.
Known gaps
We're working on these and will update this page as they're fixed:
- In the workout logger, the weight and rep fields don't yet have their own spoken names. VoiceOver reads the value or placeholder, and the set's buttons around them are labeled.
- Some charts on the Progress screen, including the trend chart and the muscle heatmap, aren't described to VoiceOver yet.
- Larger text is our weakest area. At the largest accessibility sizes, some screens can feel crowded, and a few stylized headings and the share card keep a fixed size.
- The Apple Watch app has only basic VoiceOver support, and its text doesn't follow your Watch's text size yet.
- Rebar hasn't been certified against a formal standard such as WCAG. We use it as a guide, not a claim.
Tell us what isn't working
If something in Rebar is hard to use with VoiceOver, larger text, Switch Control, Voice Control or any other assistive setting, email support@getrebar.app, or use Settings → Send feedback in the app. Tell us the screen, what you expected and the setting you use. A person reads every message.
